Born and raised in Japan, Tomita was the Japanese National High School All-Around Champion in 1973. After graduation from high school, he came to the USA on a gymnastics scholarship to California State University in Long Beach. Tomita graduated with a B.S. in Physical Education and then moved to Tucson in 1979. Since GWC's opening in 1983, Tomita has coached 11 USA Jr. Olympic National All-Around Champions (to date). In 1988 and 2000, he served as an assistant coach for the USA Men's Olympic Team. Tomita has also served as the USA Gymnastics Men's Program Committee Chairman and on the USA Gymnastics Board of Directors. Needless to say, Tomita's extraordinary passion for gymnastics is evidenced in his dedication to promoting the sport for many years.
